Lucy's first hike: chasing waterfalls in the Shawnee with her aunts

My sisters Katie and Christi came to Carbondale to meet Lucy.  The forecast was calling for wintry mix for their drive, but changed to just rain.  Lots of rain and even January thunderstorms.  But they made it to the house safely on Saturday morning.  We spend Saturday running some errands and lounging around the house with Lucy.

All that rain and some posts on Facebook groups had me thinking about chasing waterfalls.  After getting Katie some rubber boots, we headed to Devil's Kitchen Lake to see the falls on Rocky Bluff Trail.  We loaded up the jogging stroller, but luckily some hikers told us that the trail wouldn't really allow for it.  So I put Lucy in the Ergo carrier that Christi had handed down to us and put my that on my chest.  I shouldered my backpack full of camera gear, distributed hiking poles, and we started down the trail.  It was a short walk to the first falls, where we jumped a few rocks up the creek to get to the splash zone.

I didn't realize that there would be a second falls right by the parking lot on the way back, so that was a pleasant surprise.  Lucy slept in the chest pouch as I knelt in the stream with the tripod.  I wore my hip boots, so that helped me avoid falling.  Instead of jumping rock-to-rock, I could just wade the stream.

Then it was up the stairs to the truck for lunch before driving on to Bork's Falls.  The road actually crosses the creek about 75 feet from the top edge of the falls.  We walked across first, and then I drove Tux across.  We took the trail away from the falls and then doubled back toward the sound of the water crashing once we got below the bluff.  We saw a few people atop the falls, but no one down at the bottom, which surprised me considering all the rain that weekend.  We enjoyed our time by the water then headed home for nap time.
