Florida's 2018 duck opener

Last year, Bill told me that I should book a ticket to Florida for the next year's opener and he would put up with me put me up at his place and take me out for some hunts.  I booked the trip soon after returning home and was excited to get down there.  The first of our two Illinois' openers had involved no shooting and me falling on my face in chilly water.  Florida sounded like just the ticket!  If I wasn't already motivated, this is what I woke up to the morning I was to drive to the airport (thanks Ali and Sean for helping me shorten the drive)!

I picked up the rental car at Palm Beach airport (fancy pants) and greeted the locals.

Next, I met up with my mom at Capt. Hiram's in Sebastian for a grilled dolphin sandwich, catching up, and to exploit Doug's loophole that allows us to drink fruity tropical beverages when we can see the ocean.

The next day, Bill, Ed, and I did some scouting.  We saw plenty of little gators, shorebirds, and wading birds in the shallows.  We also saw one of the largest gators of my life and we all looked at each other with a "did you see that?!" look.

Then we stopped at Quail Creek, a posh sporting clays course for a tune-up before duck season.

I met up with Zack and Sam for dinner and some fish spotting in Ft. Pierce.

After a short night, it was time to head out to the lake to claim a spot for opener.  Ed's breakfast kept us warm in the inhospitable temps in the 50s.  We had only seen a few teal while scouting, but they didn't show up for opener.  We were surprised by the number of mottled ducks that came around during the hunt and we got a few of them.

I played fetch with Piper for a while.  That night, a wish was granted and I got to enjoy a Sonny's Sampler!  Mmmmm!  I also checked out Bill's workshop where he makes, flocks, and paints his decoys.

The next day, we headed down to the Glades for a change of scene.  It was great to hunt two of my primary stomping grounds from when I used to live in FL.  The hunt could have been more productive if we were facing the direction the ducks came from, but we still got a few teal, a ringer, and a few more mottled ducks.  During the lulls, we bantered about life and politics.  Imagine that: a democrat and two republicans sharing a blind and enjoying the conversation!

I had a flight to catch Monday, so we hunted an area closer to home that I had never explored.  Once again, Ed's breakfast fueled us for the hunt ahead.  It was nice to see something new and to share the blind with those rascals one more time.  We only got one volley, going three for three on wood ducks.  The marsh was very pretty with numerous treed islands among short vegetation.

The trip was great!  I missed the worst weather that we've had in Illinois yet this year while cruising all around central and south Florida, getting "one heck of an ecotour" on the airboat, dining at some places I miss, and most of all, seeing family and friends for some fun times.
